Ephesians 1:3, 4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he has chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. …” (ESV)

Doctrinal Observation

These verses are very important and for one to have what is written above, he needs to believe what is written above. This passage of Scripture has Paul singing praises to God while deeply in the Spirit. Here are a few facts concerning the passage:

  • God the Father has blessed all who believe in Christ.
  • The amount of blessings given to believers are every and all blessings.
  • The blessings we have been gifted are all spiritual in nature.
  • All believers were chosen before the first creative act was ever spoken.
  • Believers were chosen not because they were already to be holy and blameless, but were chosen to be holy and blameless.

To apply these doctrines to our lives and reap the benefits we must have faith in what is written here. No teaching, anywhere, can have an impact unless we firmly believe what is taught. This not only includes biblical teaching but all teaching.

God the Father’s Blessings

God the Father, the first person in His triune divine nature, had set within Himself that those believe in Christ would recieve blessings unlimited. God looks upon His adopted sons and daughters the same way that He looks upon His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ because they have faith in His Son as their individual Savior. By faith, we do not stand to face God alone. The phrase “in Christ” states that all believers have a spiritual standing of being in the body of Christ Himself, thus, when God looks upon the believers in Christ (the church) and their sins, He sees only perfection, for His Son was perfect. Believers reap the blessings of Christ which comes from God our Father who has blessed His Son with unlimited blessings in heaven.

Blessings Spiritual in Nature

The blessings God the Father have as His gifts for our faith in His Son are all spiritual in nature. This means we will recieve our blessings in full after we enter His presence. This, however, does not mean there are no earthly blessings for believers. Our faith in Christ is what has saved us from eternal seperation from God, and by our faith we can confidently know that we will be in Heaven, with Christ and our Father. Just to know what will become of us in this manner, is altogether an earthly blessing in itself.

Chosen Before the Earth Created

God, who knows all things, knew us and chose us for the inheritance of His Son in Heaven even before he created light and seperated it from darkness. Our names, what we would look like, and our personality were all known by God. He knew when we would take our first steps and He knows the moment of our last breath. Not only did He know all believers, He chose all believers! He did not choose us based on our righteousness or potential to be righteous, however. He chose us in accordance with His plan and His will which will be ultimately fulfilled on the last day.

Chosen to be Holy and Blameless

Many believers believe that because of merit, they were ordained to become a Christian. They also believe that if one sins too greatly or commits certain sins, their salvation will be taken from them. Neither of these are true. God has His preferred reason as to why He chose us. The Bible in no place says “if you are good, you’ll be selected for heaven”. God has always counted faith as righteousness. The only true way to please God is by faith. You have no capacity to be perfect.

So God selected us before time began. He chose us to be holy and blameless in His sight. This simply means that when we were born again, we were to put that “man of sin” away and do our best to follow the lead of the Holy Spirit and live spiritually and not by the wants of the flesh. For instance, we are to live for God rather than live for ourselves. Living for God also means living for His people. You were not chosen or saved based on your good deeds, however, to live holy before God we must take care of each other, putting our fellow Christian above ourselves.

Prayer and Meditation

Our Father who reigns over the universe, we come to you this day hoping to better understand You and Your will for our lives. We know we were saved by Your love, grace, and mercy and our salvation had nothing to do with our inward or outward goodness. We give You great praise, with our whole hearts, because You have blessed us in every way possible spiritually and in heaven. We love you, O God, because You first loved us and Your love was displayed in Christ. Now, Lord we ask of you that You continue to build our faith and strengthen us, letting us know more about You each day until we grow to completion. As always, we ask these things in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.”
