Scripture: Romans 1:18-20
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” (ESV)
What we observe from this scripture is plain. It is not tricky, it is not mysterious, it is straight forward, having no degree of difficulty in its understanding. Let’s pull a few themes out of the scripture and apply them.
- The wrath of God is revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth with unrighteousness
- What is known about God is plain to these people because God has showed it to them.
- God’s invisible attributes (His eternal power and divine nature) have been clearly percieved by everyone since the dawn of creation.
- These people know there is a God, therefore they are without any excuse in their behavior.
Let us apply these seperately and meditate on our observations throughout the next couple of days.
The Wrath of God Revealed
The suppression of truth in this particular passage means a suppression by those who deny or alter Godly truths such as the gospel. How do we apply this to our life? How do we act accordingly? Well, first of all we will want to spend time in Scripture to see exactly what the truth of the gospel is. From that point, we are not only prompted to dispell other gospels, but to defend the real gospel against such falsity. So keep a good study of Scripture at all times and learn defense of the the scripture which is a discipline known as apologetics.
What is Known About God is Plain
This scripture states that all people know that there is a God and that this God is all righteous and has no wickedness within Him. Based on this information, we can conclude that those who deny there is a God, know there is a God. So why deny God? They hold themselves as progressed animals so that they can think they escape accoutability. However, we will all be held accountable. Remember your conduct infront of such people so that it reflects Christ truly.
God Clearly Percieved
God makes it clear that He is here and alive. How does He do that? Through creation!! By the things He made we know there is a living God. He sustains the life of all things and maintains the order of the entire universe. So when we look at a tree, we can say that God created the original form of that tree and He sustains the life of that very tree itself. God is not in the tree, as though the tree could be worshiped. He is the sustainer of the tree and all life, even yours and mine.
He maintains the order of all things on earth and in the universe. Why doesn’t total chaos break out on earth through natural disasters and mankind? Because God created the earth therefore He knows the intricates of what it takes to maintain the earth. The universe is subject to God’s commands. He is why everything has a natural order and the natural order is maintained.
By these and others, it is clear that there is a higher power. We cannot escape Him, nor can the atheist. This is applied as something known.
All People Are Without Excuse
Here we find plainly in Scripture that all people will go to the great white throne judgment without an excuse. All people will be held accountable for their sins, except. For those who claim Jesus as their Savior. How can this be righteous when the gospel has not been brought to every ear of every human being? The answer is this: all people know there is a God as we discussed in the previous section. The fact that all know there is a God makes them liable for their thoughts and actions before God. Those who claim that there is no God have literally tried to escape the inevitable accountability that God will hold them to on the judgment. As we have said, God is clearly perceived by all, so all are without excuse. When one knows there is an all righteous God by the simple study of orderly nature and their own conscience, they will seek a way to be saved from their sins. This will lead them to Christ, the only true Savior and Lord of the earth.
“Heavenly Father, we now know that all humanity is accountable for their sins. We would like, together, to give you praise in the fact that you have elected us for eternal life in heaven, knowing we deserve nothing of the kind. But you, O mighty God, have made a way for us to live with you eternally by the offering of your Son, Jesus Christ. We want to ever recognize Him daily, and we want to always give thanks that you loved us so much that you sent your one and only true Son to take away our sins. Heavenly Father, we are gracious and we give our unified thanksgiving and praise as we glorify you through Christ. In Jesus holy name we pray, Amen”.
