“For I am NOT ashamed of the gospel, for it is the POWER of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is REVEALED from faith to faith, as it is written, ‘The righteous shall live by faith” (Romans 1:16-17, ESV)
This scripture can be looked at with many different, yet right ways. Here in this devotional I will list three key observations from the text about the gospel. Here they are:
- Paul was not ashamed of the gospel
- The gospel is the power of God for salvation
- The righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel
Let us dive a little bit deeper in these observations. Paul was an example for all of us in being unashamed in the gospel. Paul was fully persuaded that within the words of the gospel, salvation was found by faith and only faith.
The power of God is found in the gospel. How? Believing the gospel entitles you to salvation by promise with no questions asked. To save one from death, hell and destruction was a powerful work done by God in Christ Jesus.
The righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel. God in all his goodness decided that He was going to show mercy and grace instead of the judgment of death all mankind deserved. He decided this before anything was created. This mercy and grace is found only in faith in Christ and the gospel.
All scripture was written to be applied to our life in some way. To apply this scripture passage to our life, we can narrow the observations down to one thought. This thought is faith, faith, faith. If we have faith in the gospel, being fully persuaded of its power to save, then their would be no shame in us when we tell others. We have to have faith to really understand how powerful God really is. So how do we get this faith?
We get faith by hearing the Word and believing it in all things. We need firstly, to properly understand the Word, and then we need to believe it even if we have to take baby steps only believing small things first. We need faith to properly understand the Word so read it in faith and ask questions to God and wait for His answer.
Let us all act out our faith as well. Let us, by faith, let the worries of life die. Let us, by faith, continually do good works for others knowing we are to see others better than ourselves. Let us, by faith, destroy the works of Satan by testifying to all souls who will listen. These and more are how we act out our faith.
Heavenly Father, today we come to you in a request that you give us the faith we need to be saved. We request you give us the faith to act out what we believe in Christ by doing good works for your people, esteeming others higher than ourselves. Father we pray in Jesus name that if they are any lost souls who read or have this read to, that they will, by faith, come into your salvation by belief only as Paul instructs us. God if there is anything left on the hearts of the readers, I pray you answer them in your will and your will alone. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
